“Tackling industrial challenges with Avencore provides great learning opportunities”
Marius Götz – Consultant – KIT (2022)
Why have you decided to join Avencore?
To be honest, I was skeptical about consultancies in the beginning. I envisioned the stereotypical approach of major players who would engage with a company for a brief period of time, devise theoretical concepts and then disappear.
I got to know Avencoreat the KIT Career Fair and they convinced me as a consultancy because they don’t just develop concepts and present them to clients. We develop concepts together with our clients and support the implementation to increase their industrial competitiveness. In addition, tackling industrial challenges with Avencore provides great learning opportunities.
Why have you decided to work in consulting and not in industry?
In consulting you go through many different projects, get different insights and work on different tasks. Unlike in industry, you don’t have the same tasks for the first few years, which can get monotonous and boring.
As a result, the learning curve in consulting is quite steep. This is supported by the generally very dynamic, ambitious and young working environment that you also have at Avencore.
What has been your personal highlight so far during your time at Avencore?
We had a project with a satellite manufacturer and were given a production tour at the end of the project. Such satellites are manufactured in a clean room. That means before you go in there, you first have to go through an airlock and then put on protective clothing including a hair net and shoe covers. Then you come into a very large, super tidy room in the middle of which there are one or two satellites and everything revolves around them. It’s hard to imagine, but it’s very impressive. Things are assembled ultra slowly and very carefully. It’s really special to see this big satellite and all the technology and cables in front of you.
What was useful in your studies to work at Avencore?
I studied industrial engineering in Karlsruhe. And sometimes during your studies you ask yourself: When will I ever need these things? But in the job, you realize that the details are not so important per se, but you have positioned yourself very broadly as an industrial engineer, because you learn more than you think during your studies. You also learn how to quickly familiarize yourself with new topics. That helps me a lot in consulting, because we also work on different things. One day you’re more in purchasing, then in controlling, and then again more in engineering.
What tips do you have for students about starting a career in consulting?
Definitely give it a try! Consulting offers tremendous learning opportunities, and it’s truly fascinating. The field often presents dynamic challenges, so being adaptable and stress-resilient are valuable qualities to successfully navigate the demands of the profession.
Especially during the application process itself, I would ask as many questions as possible to find out about the company and its activities, as there are so many different consultancies and specializations.
Once you are at Avencore, you should dare to ask your questions, not only to your buddy, but also to everyone else.
